Birdsong workshop on Instagram
Not the most exciting photo, but as I was sewing this shirt last night (using my favourite shirt pattern - the #unionstreettee - modified to be exactly what I want in a shirt), I was reveling in the fact that whenever something I love wears out, not only can I mend it, but I can replicate it. I think I have made this shirt four times now (three in a rayon/linen, this version in a merino wool/tencel blend) and I have a fifth cut out for sewing as well! In any case, this is my PSA to encourage you to #learntosew your own clothes if you are so inclined! Rough draft of my next quilt. The colour squares will have 2 inch sashing between them. I finally have a plan to use up these weird little blocks out of my stash. I've been waiting for this box of colour to arrive! I don't normally weave in such bright hues, but I have a very plain warp on (8 yards/off white that was originally going to be Xmas towels) and am looking for a little lift. Beach towel it is! I'm weaving on the narrow loom so I will weave 2 panels and then sew them together. I've got 41 6.5 inch pieced quilt squares that have been in my stash forever. I sewed them eight years ago with the intention of making a 100 block quilt but I didn't love the way they were turning out so they went in a pile. Pulling them out now I can see how much I've learned about colour theory and sewing in the meantime! But even so, I've convinced myself they need to be sewn into something. So I've ordered 5 yards of dark grey fabric and this morning I mapped out a queen size quilt top. #quiltinglove #quiltsofinstagram #quiltersofinstagram #textilestudio #textiledesign
Setting up the loom and winding warp chains for my next #weaving project today. Yarn is Zephyr Wool-Silk which I have only worked with once before (this uses some leftovers from that long ago project). I *love* the colour pallette and hand of this yarn and am crossing my fingers that I will have a beautiful shadow weave shawl to wrap around myself in time for my birthday in early February. According to my insta feed, in August 2018 I was in the "end stages" of piecing this quilt. I had put together the center nine panels and just needed to figure out the sashing around them. And that is where I put this project away. As part of my end of year UFO process, I have spent a couple more hours with it and am committed to finishing this quilt top tomorrow with a plan to send it out for #quilting in the new year (it's worth the cost to me for professional quilting on an item of this size). It will be nice to get this one on the bed after languishing for so long! #textilestudio #quiltersofinstagram #quiltersofawesome
Before I start to plan my textile projects for the new year, I pull out my UFO (unfinished object) baskets and empty them onto my work surfaces. I frog crochet and knitting I have no interest in finishing, pull finished garments out that I didn't like and try them on again, and deconstruct sewing where I want to recover the fabric for future projects. These UFOs often span many years and may have been taken out of the basket for annual evaluation more than once. But there comes a point where I acknowledge that finishing is never going to happen and I might as well free up the materials and the space. Keeper projects get sorted with immediate finishers in a pile to be done before year end. Longer term ones get prioritized for the start of the year and I prep them by ironing and making a plan. It helps me start the new year with fresh intention and the bonus is that I often find knitting needles, scissors and other useful items tucked into the baskets and they can get cycled back into use. #textilestudio #weaversofinstagram #sewistsofinstagram

My final weaving project of 2021. Wool/silk, hand dyed and woven. Dyes featured include madder, cochineal, lac, eastern brazilwood, marigold, and dhalia all sourced through @maiwaschooloftextiles except the dhalia which came from my yard.
