Design Notebook: Juliana Wrap

I’m still working diligently on the Saturn Sweater I started two weeks ago, and am pretty pleased to say that I’ve got the body and three-quarters of each sleeve done. I’m hopeful that even with my weekend visitor I will be able to finish the sleeves and get the button-bands completed so I can block the sweater by early next week and complete the colour-work next weekend. I’m pretty pleased with this project so far as it has been easy to follow the (corrected) instructions, and as it is made in one piece, I don’t have a lot of stitching up to do in order to finish. Also, I’m really digging the fact that I will have such a fine-fit on a cardigan since I’ve been altering it as I go.

As I am getting towards a conscious end-point, I’ve been thinking about what next – and one thing I really want in my wardrobe is a shawlette for wrapping around the neck or shoulders. Of course, I’ve still got Christmas presents to work on, but it’s nice to also have something on the go for me!

So I swung by Baaad Anna’s yesterday with an idea to pick up some yarn to make a Juliana Wrap (many pictures of the Juliana Wrap online via Google Image search), and ended up a little above my budget with two skeins of Sweet George Tough Love Sock in Rogue and Grape Jelly colourways:

But you can see why, right? Because they are so totally awesome and the skeins I picked out (those pictures are from the website) are a lot more complementary in real-life/dye-lot. Plus, I never make things in purple and the other day a co-worker wore a purple scarf that she knit and it inspired me around that particular colour. So! When I get that sweater blocked I’m going to knock off another washcloth or three in Dishie, and then it’s to the Juliana Wrap I will turn. I’m quite excited about these colours and if I can figure out the pattern I’m sure it will turn out just as nice as the other hundred or so that I’ve seen online.

Life always gets better in Vancouver.

Yesterday well and truly sucked. There’s no other way to put it. It was an all-around shitty day between the work meeting where management outlined its re-org (and layoff) strategy and the hospital, where my biopsy proved to be far trickier than the last two. I tried my damndest to put a chipper face on the whole thing, but there’s not much you can do to make watching people lose their jobs and cancer testing feel good inside.

At least there was cake at the end of the day. St. Honore cake from Fratelli’s on the Drive – the nearest thing to heaven that I know.

And fortunately, today is not yesterday! And my really good friend A. is coming to town tomorrow to spend three days in our lovely, rainy city. So far I’m thinking that Parade of Lost Souls, the suspension bridge over Lynn Valley (and hike around the area), and (if we can get a reservation) dinner at  Les Faux Bourgeois or Bao Bei are all possibilities for things to do. Also, drinks on the Drive, hanging around our ‘hood, and perhaps a nip over to Bowen Island for dinner at the pizza place depending how energetic we’re all feeling. Even in the rain, Vancouver is pretty awesome – as long as you dress for the weather, it’s got lots on offer. Highlights in the city for me include the great hikes and great food in particular.

But for those folks who like more indoor activities (and cultural events, and rec center access) a new program was announced yesterday which partners the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Public Library in something called the “Inspiration Pass”. Basically, VPL card holders can check an Inspiration Pass out of their local library once a year which entitles them to two weeks of free activities including family access to the Planetarium, Art Gallery, Opera, Rec Centers and more! Check it out here and get on the wait list at your local branch (passes are limited to five per local branch and fifteen at the central).

Since I’ve been a big complainer about how Vancouver events/venues are way too expensive for most families to afford – I think this is a great first step towards making these things accessible again. I’m hopeful that when the pass actually comes my way (I’m 50 on the waiting list for my branch) that there will be some good Opera or Symphony to get signed up for – which would be an added bonus to just having a few places to go in the rainier winter months. What’s great too is that the pass is for the *family* which means that each of us in our household could get the pass once a year for a total of six weeks of activities and events.

Anyhow – way to go CoV and VPL! The Inspiration Pass is definitely inspired!

Returning to crazy.

I wish I had pictures of the projects I’ve been working on during my holiday – finishing a set of crochet placemats (8) for my mom, and starting my first ever sweater (of which I’ve completed the body and am just about to start on the arms) – because crochet is a lot more fun than all the crazy I’ve returned to.

Not only is tomorrow another big-horrible-announcement day at work (layoffs, program reconfiguring), but I’ve just now discovered that I’m scheduled for a *third* biopsy on my thyroid in the afternoon. (The biopsy wasn’t news, but I didn’t know the date until this morning). So that’s loads of fun in one day – morning with bosses and unhappy workers, afternoon with radiology (and big needles).

Remind me again why holidays can’t be *all* the time?
