More apocalypse, less angst

stayed up past my bedtime tonight to finish the rug (was so close, i had to do the last row….) and post pictures of it…. here is what forty-eight thousand six hundred and ninety-two stitches looks like:

it still needs to be stretched, ironed and then backed to be truly finished – but eight months of stitching means the hard part is done 🙂

Wow, that’s awesome! Did you really count the stitches? Or do you just know based on the size, etc.? Seems like it would have to be an even number (length x width = total), but I guess not.
My wife does cross-stitch projects too. Mostly small blankets for babies that get born to friends and family members. She puts their names and maybe a symbol or something that is meaningful to the parents. She would like to do larger projects, but she has nerve damage in her elbow from a back injury, so she can’t work on things consistently for a long time.
So, are you able to stretch the rug yourself and put the backing on, or does that require special equipment?
uh – yeah – you are right, the number should be even… i can’t remember off the top of my head but it was something like 259 * 152 or something…. i think maybe those 3s should be 8s…. anyhow – i just multiplied the top by the side count (i’m going to check this when i get home, cause 33 doesn’t really make any sense).
i have never made anything of this size before – but my plan for stretching it is just to pin it to the wall of my closet using carpet tacks – with even tension – and i hope that will stretch it a bit more square again (it’s slightly off kilter). the backing is straight forward – i just have to stitch a piece of linene on once i have it all straightened out.
i do a lot of small stuff as well – but not so much for awhile. i’m into this big stuff right now… have another few projects in mind on the big canvas – but i’m thinking of starting a smaller project simultaneously as they are easier to travel with!
